They sit next to each other rather than on top of each other. Writing Tools gives you Apple’s fixed set of edits: proofread, rewrite, make it friendly. Orbwing runs prompts you wrote, with the wording, tone rules and output format you decided on, and it puts them in the same ring as launching an app, opening a project folder or running a build script. Use Writing Tools for the standard passes and Orbwing for the ones that are specific to how you work.

The free month starts the first time you launch Orbwing — no card, no account, nothing to sign up for. When it ends, Orbwing pauses entirely: the ring stops appearing until you subscribe. It does not quietly degrade into a lesser version, and it never deletes anything. Your rings, packs, per-app setups and settings sit exactly where you left them, and subscribing brings all of it straight back. The free month is one per customer and per device, ever, across both editions.

The one from orbwing.com, unless you have a reason not to. It is the full app: AI runs on the text you have selected in whatever app you are in and replaces it in place, and shell scripts, AppleScript and Shortcuts can all sit in a ring. The Mac App Store edition is sandboxed by Apple’s rules, so AI works from copied text instead and script actions are unavailable; it is coming later, and the subscription is the same either way.

On macOS 26 and later, no — actions run on Apple’s on-device model, which is free and needs no setup. On macOS 14 and 15 there is no on-device model, so AI actions need a key of your own. Beyond that, a key is only for people who want a frontier model on certain actions, and you add it per action, so you can keep everyday edits local and send only the heavy ones out.

Not with the default model. On-device inference means the text never touches a network. If you deliberately point an action at Anthropic, OpenAI or a remote Ollama host, that action’s text goes to that provider and nowhere else. Orbwing has no server, no account and no analytics of its own.

Three. One licence key activates Orbwing on up to three Macs at a time, and the key follows the subscription rather than a machine. Retiring a Mac? Deactivate it from inside the app and the slot is free again immediately. Once activated, a Mac keeps working for seven days offline before it needs to check in.

No. There is nothing to sign up for and no password to invent. When you subscribe, a licence key is emailed to you; you paste it into Orbwing once and that is the whole of it. The free month does not even need that much — just download and launch.

It is in development. When it lands, one subscription will cover both platforms — three devices in any mix of Macs and PCs.

All three. Hold right-click on a mouse, hold a two-finger click or a hotkey on a trackpad, and ⌥Space anywhere. Once the ring is open you can also sweep with arrow keys or type the first letters of an action, so nothing forces your hand off the keys if it is already there.
