Raycast alternative
A Raycast alternative that isn't another command bar
Most Raycast alternatives copy the same idea: press a hotkey, type into a text field, pick from a list. Orbwing does something different. Press a hotkey or hold right-click, and a ring of your actions blooms right at your cursor. Sweep to the one you want and let go. No typing, no results list, no window taking focus away from what you were doing.

Why look for one
Raycast is good. Some people still want something else.
Raycast earned its reputation: a huge extension store, a polished command bar, real AI features. None of that is in question. But a command bar has a fixed shape: it opens a window, usually centered on screen, and asks you to type. If your hand is already on the mouse, the trackpad or a pen, mid-edit or mid-canvas, that shape is not the fastest path.
Orbwing is built for that other moment. It is not trying to out-extend Raycast; it is a different interaction aimed at the actions your hand should already know by feel, wherever your cursor happens to be.

Honest scorecard
Where each one actually wins.
This is not a case for throwing Raycast away. It is a case for trying a different interaction for the moments a command bar handles worst.
Where Orbwing wins
- A gesture at your cursor instead of a text field you have to look at and type into
- Per-app rings: each app can get its own set of actions, not just its own commands in one shared list
- AI pricing: bring your own key, or use Apple's free on-device model, with no separate AI subscription
- Your hand stays on the mouse or trackpad; nothing forces you back to the keyboard mid-task
Where Raycast wins
- Ecosystem: thousands of community extensions built up over years
- Brand and funding: a well-funded, widely reviewed tool with a real team behind it
- Team features: shared commands and collaboration tools Orbwing does not have
- Raycast runs on macOS and Windows; Orbwing is Mac-native and macOS only
Other options
If a command bar is what you actually want.
Not every Raycast alternative needs to change the interaction. If you want to stay in the type-and-search model, two others are worth knowing:
- AlfredA mature, scriptable command bar with a one-time price, roughly $43 for the Powerpack, instead of a subscription. See our Orbwing vs Alfred comparison.
- SpotlightFree and built into macOS. It is a search box, not an action surface, so it is a fine baseline but not a real substitute for either Raycast or Orbwing once you want scripting or per-app actions.
Where the gesture actually helps
Three moments a command bar handles worse.
- Mid-edit, hand on the mouseSelect a paragraph in any app, hold right-click, sweep to "Summarize" or "Rewrite," and the result replaces the selection in place.
- Different apps, different actionsIn Xcode, the ring can hold build and simulator actions. In a terminal, a different set entirely. One gesture, and the ring adapts to where you are.
- A whole workflow in one sweepNest actions into a pack: open the PR, post to a deploy channel, open the dashboard, all from one node in the ring.
Questions
Raycast alternatives, answered.
What is the best Raycast alternative for Mac?
It depends what you want. If you want a bigger or cheaper command bar, Raycast is hard to beat on its own terms. If you want a fundamentally different interaction, a radial gesture menu that opens at your cursor instead of a text field, Orbwing is built specifically for that.
Is Orbwing a clone of Raycast?
No. Orbwing does not have a command bar, a text query field, or a results list. You press a hotkey or hold right-click, a ring of actions appears at your cursor, and you sweep to one. It is a different input model built for the hand that is already on the mouse or trackpad.
Do I have to give up Raycast to try Orbwing?
No. They run side by side without conflict. Most people who try Orbwing keep their keyboard launcher for typed search and use Orbwing for the actions their hand should already know by feel.
Does a Raycast alternative need to be free?
Spotlight is the free option and it is a search box, not an action surface. Orbwing charges $2.99 a month or $19.99 a year after a first month free, and unlike Raycast does not charge extra on top of that for AI.
What about Alfred as a Raycast alternative?
Alfred is a mature, scriptable command bar with a one-time price, roughly $43 for the Powerpack. It is a strong alternative if you want to stay in the typed-query model but avoid a subscription. See our Orbwing vs Alfred comparison for the full breakdown.
